Meet the Playwright IV

David Alex
Adrift
by David Alex
November 9th at 2pm and 14th at 7:30pm

From the start of conversation, playwright David Alex—whose new work Adrift is in Polarity Ensemble Theatre’s upcoming Dionysos Cup—is engaging and gregarious.

Excited his new work is being produced in a staged reading performance, David said he’s already gained much from this process. Working closely with his director, Brea Hayes, David has been very active in collaboration. They’ve been discussing character and dynamics. Tweaks are made and the discussion continues.

“I’ve always felt the name of the game is collaboration,” David said.

As the readings of plays in the Cup are spread across two weekends, David finds yet another chance to improve his work from the first weekend to the next. “You need the input,” he said. “By hearing the script and listening to the suggestions of the actors and audience, you’re able to see what works and what doesn’t.”

According to David, "The chances for tweaks and revision to new works in an environment such as the Dionysos Cup wouldn't be possible without the vibrant artistic scene that Chicago offers. You have that resource of generous actors and producers who are willing to devote time, all of the time. It's all because of their love of the theater and sharing ideas," he said.

He cites the diversity and wide variety of companies in the city. With that diversity comes the ambition, always searching for the next play, concert or exhibit for inspiration. David has seen many works in the city and sometimes thinks after, that was wonderful, I wonder if I can do that?

“Nothing inspires people more than success,” he said.

All Dionysos Cup performances will take place at Polarity Ensemble Theatre's new space in residence at the Josephinum Academy, 1500 N. Bell, Chicago. Click here for more details.

Polarity Ensemble member Travis Gauchay recently interviewed the playwrights of the Dionysos Cup, our upcoming Festival of New Plays. The festival also features Bryce Wissel, Darren Callahan and Lisa Rosenthal. This is the fourth in the series of profiles.
