Playwriting Seminar

Richard Engling
Artistic Director, Richard Engling
Richard Engling will offer a seminar in playwriting. The class will be held from 1-3 pm on Thursdays beginning Sept. 28, 2006 for 8 sessions in south Evanston near Howard and Western (Asbury) Avenues. The focus of the seminar will be the full-length play, though it won't be restricted to that. Playwrights who are currently working on or working toward a new play will find this seminar particularly useful. It will offer a blend of instruction, exercises and critique. The seminar fee is $160. For more information and to register, call 847-475-1139. The seminar will be limited to no more than six students for the optimal learning experience.
Here are a few comments from Richard's students in his most recent playwriting class:

I really enjoyed your class and feel I learned a great deal because of your knowledge base as well as your generosity as an instructor.

I've taken a number of playwriting classes, and this was the best by far.

This was the most I've ever got out of a writing class.

Richard is an experienced playwriting instructor, most recently teaching in the Open Door Ensemble program, which is affiliated with Northlight Theatre. He holds a BSE in Theatre and an MA in Creative Writing. In graduate school at Indiana University, he studied under Sam Smiley, author of Playwriting: The Structure of Action. Richard's first novel, Body Mortgage, was published by Penguin Putnam in 1989. The Chicago Actors Ensemble produced his play, Ghost Watch, around that same time. Polarity Ensemble Theatre Books just released his first book of plays: Antigone and Macbeth: Adaptations for a War-Torn Time. Richard is also an actor, director and jazz drummer. He is the Artistic Director of Polarity Ensemble Theatre and directed PET's acclaimed first show, Absolute Macbeth. PET recently produced his adaptation of Antigone and has his musical Singing in the Grave and his play Ghost Watch in development for upcoming productions. He has appeared in productions with Keyhole Theatre, ShakespeareInc, Chicago Actors Ensemble, the American Institute of Barcelona, the Bop Shop, and the ImprovOlympic (now IO).
