"fresh-faced and likeable" Chicago Reader Recommended! "Henry Fielding's 262-year-old comic novel isn't a likely candidate for stage adaptation. Its tangled web of subplots is populated by dozens of characters, and it teems with long, dry authorial asides. But it's also full of wit and timeless social observations, out of which Polarity Ensemble Theatre's lively production makes hay. David Hammond's adaptation pares the story to its essentials while preserving Fielding's choicest bons mots. Marcus Davis and Alex Fisher are fresh-faced and likable as good-hearted, hapless Tom and his sweetheart, Sophie. They and the rest of the cast stand out like vivid, charming color plates against Dennis Mae's wonderfully austere set, the walls of which are plastered with pages from the novel.
"Maggie Speer's direction is artful" " Tom Jones (Marcus Davis), that famous foundling, has well-turned calves and a fine head of hair. He also has a taste for ladies, especially true love Sophia (Alex Fisher), and for scrapes...When the whole ensemble gathers, Maggie Speer's direction is artful; there's a mesmerizing masked ball, and an ingenious hunt scene in which cast members hold branches aloft and evoke dogs, birds and horses." |
